Everyone has an answer to the ultimate hypothetical: What would your last meal be? Josh Scherer has been asking celebrities and culinary icons from Tom Hanks to Gordon Ramsay that question—and serving the actual meals while diving deep into interviews with his guests—across more than 100 episodes on “Last Meals”. The show is a hit on Mythical Kitchen, a YouTube channel blending cooking, comedy and food history from Rhett & Link’s Mythical Entertainment, and it was recently announced that episodes will be coming to Netflix as well.
When he’s not interviewing and eating with famous faces or collaborating with the rest of the Mythical Kitchen crew, Scherer flexes his culinary muscles in his own kitchen. So we turned the questions on him. With a food-focused career, what are the tools and gadgets he loves as a chef, and why?
For Scherer, it’s all about actually putting his gear to use. “You can have the coolest, most high-tech immersion circulator on the market, but if you don’t use it at least semi-regularly, what’s the point?” he says. “I think the key to getting the most joy from your cooking tools is being honest about your own habits and needs.”
That might mean making some trade-offs. “I sacrificed my coffee maker so I could permanently keep a meat grinder on the counter, and, though I know that sounds bizarre to most people, my life has been better for it. Plus, Café Bustelo instant espresso is pretty good.”
From countertop appliances to an ice cube mold, here are the seven culinary tools he uses again and again.
